Essaouira enjoys a particularly stable oceanic climate: temperature swings between summer and winter stay modest, and rain remains rare most of the year. But this consistency hides real differences depending on what you're after — beach time, surf, quiet, or festive energy. Here's how to navigate it, month by month.

Spring (March to May): the most balanced season

For many regulars, spring remains the most pleasant time to discover Essaouira. Temperatures climb gently, between 14°C in the morning and 20°C in the afternoon by April, with generous sunshine and very little rain after March. It's also a quieter season than summer in terms of crowds, leaving more room to wander the medina without feeling rushed.

Spring is also marked by the Gnaoua World Music Festival, usually held in June but whose buildup and rising buzz are already felt as early as May. If you're planning to attend this major city event, it's best to book accommodation several months ahead — riads fill up fast during this period.

"Spring is the perfect compromise: warm enough to enjoy the beach, calm enough to still feel the city's local rhythm."

Summer (June to August): wind, crowds, and long days

Unlike inland Morocco, Essaouira never suffers from stifling heat in summer. Thanks to its proximity to the Atlantic, daytime temperatures generally cap around 22 to 26°C, even at the height of August. The trade-off: the wind. The trade winds pick up noticeably between June and August, making this the best window for surfing and especially kitesurfing, though it can make some beach afternoons a bit uncomfortable for anyone just looking to relax in the sun.

It's also peak tourist season: the medina is livelier, accommodation prices climb, and you should expect more people at the must-see spots. If surfing or watersports are your priority, this is hands-down the best window of the year. If you're after quiet instead, plan to visit the most popular sites early in the morning.

Autumn (September to November): the best-kept secret

If we had to recommend just one time of year, this would probably be it. The wind drops noticeably compared to summer, the summer crowds disperse, and water temperature hits its yearly peak — the ocean has had all summer to warm up. September and October offer the best compromise for swimming: water that's more welcoming than in peak summer, and days that are still long and mild, around 22°C in the afternoon.

It's also the season for argan and olive harvests in the region, which makes cooperative visits especially interesting: the women pressing the oil are in full swing, and the atmosphere in the surrounding villages is different from the rest of the year. For surfers, the lighter wind makes for softer waves — a great time for absolute beginners, less ideal for experienced riders chasing bigger thrills.

Winter (December to February): mild, quiet, occasionally unpredictable

Winter in Essaouira stays surprisingly mild compared to Europe: daytime temperatures generally hold between 17 and 19°C, even if nights can drop to around 9 to 12°C, accompanied by a cool breeze. December and January are the wettest months of the year, with a few rainy or grey-sky days, but nothing comparable to a continental winter — rainy days remain a minority.

This is the low season par excellence: prices are at their lowest, the city settles into an almost local rhythm, and you can explore the medina or stroll the ramparts without any crowds at all. For a cultural city break away from the summer buzz, winter has undeniable charm — just pack a few warm layers for the evenings.

In summary: which season for which trip?

At the end of the day, there's no real bad season in Essaouira — only seasons suited to different moods. The city's oceanic climate smooths out the extremes all year round; it's up to you to pick the atmosphere that suits you best.
